"My main influence on women growing up was female teachers," said Elshafi-Leyman, who is the first female head of school in the 120-year history of Massanutten Military Academy. "They were definitely strong and they made a good impression. They made me see what I was. There is nothing more powerful than having people who really believe in you, and for me they were teachers."

Raised in a military family, Elshafi-Leyman moved the boy around often until he settled in Royal View, Virginia. When not playing football or track, he is often working on art projects. In college, Elshafi-Leyman was initially intrigued by marketing, but education quickly answered his call. After earning a bachelor's degree in English and two master's degrees in education and adult learning and administration and supervision, she began her academic career as a public school teacher. After 12 years in public schools, Elshafie-Layman joined the Massanutten faculty in 2011.

"Massanutten Military Academy offered me autonomy in the classroom and the opportunity to really get to know my students," he said. “I've also been given opportunities to be a leadership role and to appeal. I felt that I could make a difference in the academic program that MMA was offering at the time.

An English teacher first, Elshafi-Leyman became department chair before being named academic dean in 2013. In 2018, he was appointed head of school and has seen a steady increase in attendance during his tenure.

"One of the reasons I wanted STEM for all MMA cadets was that many women shy away from math and science," Elshafi-Leyman said. "Our STEM program allows them to choose the path they want to follow, and most people leave MMA with a foundation and great ideas about the opportunities available to them as women."
